Premature ovarian insufficiency

menopause

This is the loss of ovarian function indicated by irregular menstrual cycles, along with blood tests confirm ovarian insufficiency before the age of 40 years of age.

If you have been given this diagnosis, you are not alone.

There may be a family history of early menopause, your mother may recall going through menopause early or you may have had treatments such as ovarian surgery or cancer treatment, that could have resulted in the early loss of ovarian function. However, for a large group of women, this may come as a complete surprise as there is no obvious reason as to why this has happened. Our understanding of the genetic causes of premature ovarian insufficiency is increasing and may later identify a reason for some women.

The free Ask Early Menopause app is also a great source of information.

We will work through your medical background and arrange for tests to be preformed to try to identify the known possible causes of early menopause. In terms of fertility, it can make it challenging to stimulate the ovaries to carry out IVF and it is important to get specific advice for you.

If there is an underlying genetic cause, it may have implications for your sisters or future genetic daughters and this is something to consider before arranging the tests.

It is also very important to have a long-term plan in place to reduce your overall health risks. The general recommendation is that, without any contraindications a woman should be on higher dose estrogen containing hormone therapy until the natural age of menopause.
